"Anyway, you yourself installed Walter Moon as Supreme Commander. That apparently didn't give him tenure."
Suhail Akbar to Nicolae Carpathia shortly after Carpathia murdered Moon[src]

Walter Moon is a supporting antagonist in the Left Behind series. He was a prominent member of the Global Community who was promoted to the role of Supreme Commander after Leon Fortunato's promotion to High Reverend Father of Carpathianism and Jim Hickman's death. Before that, he was Director of Security for the Global Community. After his death, the Supreme Commander position was dissolved.

Biography[]

After the Rapture[]

He was first mentioned in Assassins when David Hassid was eavesdropping on a phone conversation between Moon and Leon Fortunato about the whereabouts of Hattie Durham and Samuel Hansen. He had sprung a trap that he hoped that Hattie's Judah-ite friends would find her through Samuel's brother, Bo Hansen.

He collaborated with Mr. Wong in sedating his son Chang so that he can receive the mark of loyalty while incapacitated over Chang's resistance to taking the mark so that the computer wunderkind Chang can become a technical employee of the Global Community and make his family proud. Moon was impressed with Chang Wong's intellect and qualifications that Moon countered David Hassid's objections to Chang working for the Global Community, despite the personnel manual saying that Chang was too young.

Moon was tasked with outfitting and arming the Peacekeepers and Morale Monitors during Carpathia's visit in Jerusalem when Carpathia claims the Temple as his home as he proclaims himself God. Carpathia told him he had the exorbitant resources of the Global Community and told him not to spare one Nick in his effort "to make the GCMM the most powerful enforcement juggernaut the world has ever seen". Carpathia affirmed to Moon that he was lifting the embargo against open display of military power in the form of bombers, fighters, tanks, and other such military hardware. Carpathia told Moon to "have fun with it" and "enjoy" this task. Moon had organized more than one-hundred thousand plainclothes, armed Morale Monitors and unformed Peacekeepers for the task.

Moon, on his own initiative without telling Carpathia, directed his personnel to lead the way in taking the mark of loyalty before the civilians and Carpathianist pilgrims in Jerusalem. Apparently, Walter was spooked by the change in attitude of the crowd after witnessing the intrepid martyrdom of Hattie Durham at the hands of Leon Fortunato and the mysterious illness of Reverend Fortunato caused by the plague of boils. This had catastrophic consequences for the Global Community contingent in Jerusalem since Carpathia's enforcement apparatus would be incapacitated by the painful sores, rendering them incapable of handling the throng of angry orthodox Jews who were offended by Carpathia's abomination of desolation by proclaiming himself to be God, erecting a statue in the Temple, killing a pig and sprinkling its blood on the altar, and murdering a man with Moon's sidearm in the Temple.

Moon begged Carpathia to be the first to bear his mark and swore that he would bear it with endless pride. In Desecration, he got his wish when he received the mark of loyalty along with his fellow members of the Global Community cabinet, Suhail Akbar and Viv Ivins, at the Temple Mount a day before Nicolae Carpathia committed the abomination of desolation. He received a dark "-6" on his forehead for his mark of loyalty. Carpathia expressed his disappointment with him when he expressed some misgivings to Carpathia's plans to attack the Judah-ites and Jews who are assembled at the Mount of Olives, Mizpe Ramon, Masada and Petra by referring to Micah's threat that an attack would bring back the plague of the sores or turn the waters of the world into blood. Carpathia was getting tired of Moon's whining when he was afflicted with the plague of the boils. The final straw for Carpathia was his failure to promptly terminate a hijacked broadcast of Tsion Ben-Judah delivering a message from Global Community's own television network. Angered by the appearance of Ben-Judah on television, a choleric Carpathia shot Moon to death when Moon's frantic pleas to the network failed to terminate the broadcast.

Personality[]

He is not charismatic or comfortable addressing crowds. While he was addressing a crowd of Carpathia loyalists at the Garden Tomb, he said that he was temporarily filling in for Leon Fortunato. Someone called out whether Fortunato was all right. Moon replied that Fortunato was "better than all right judging by his performance at Golgotha" where Fortunato earlier called down fire from the skies to incinerate Hattie Durham for boldly speaking out against Carpathia and Fortunato and saying that Jesus Christ is the mediator between God and man. He thought his response would elicit a laugh, but he timidly returned to his reading his notes. Towards the end of the speech as a means of proclaiming the resurrection of Carpathia and as an expression of disdain towards Christianity, he proclaimed "he is risen" which did not immediately draw an enthusiastic response from the crowd.

He said that he does not trust Pakistanis and that he did not understand those types when he heard about the appointment of Suhail Akbar to Walter's former office as the Director of Security and Intelligence of the Global Community. Jim Hickman and Leon Fortunato called Walter Moon "Wally".
