A militia is a military force that is raised from the civil population to supplement a regular army in an emergency. It can also be a military force that engages in rebel or terrorist activities in opposition to a regular army.
In the Left Behind series, independent militia groups and rogue US military elements sprang up in opposition to Nicolae Carpathia and the growing influence of the Global Community, although it is not known how many chose to become part of the Tribulation Force by becoming Christians during the Tribulation. In Tribulation Force, Gerald Fitzhugh, whose position as President of the United States was replaced by the appointment of the subpotentate for the United North American States, was aligning himself with the militia in a failed attempt to overthrow Carpathia and to regain his position as a national leader. This action ended up becoming World War III and resulted in Fitzhugh's death.
