Indwelling in the Biblical sense means being possessed by a spirit. According to Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkins' interpretation, the Bible teaches that all believers in Christ are indwelt by the Holy Spirit when they are "born again" (when they receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior).

It is possible that some of the disciples, such as Peter and Judas, were indwelt by Satan in a sense. In John 6:70, Jesus referred to one of his disciples (Judas Iscariot) as a devil. Jesus told Peter, "Get behind me, Satan" while they were at Caesarea Philippi, but he also praised Peter for saying that his confession of Jesus being the Messiah could only come from the Father in heaven. In Glorious Appearing, Satan himself also took credit for entering into Judas and for making Peter deny Jesus during the evening before Jesus' crucifixion.

In the Left Behind series, Nicolae Carpathia was indwelt by Satan after his death at the hands of Chaim Rosenzweig. The indwelling healed Nicolae's body and restarted his metabolism.

The indwelling presence of Satan gave Nicolae powers such as no longer requiring food, water or sleep, and limited immunity to supernatural effects, such as invulnerability against the rays of the sun during the fourth Bowl Judgment, and the ability to emit a faint glow that was visible to others during the complete darkness of the fifth Bowl Judgment.

On a few occasions, when Nicolae became too full of himself and started speaking as if he were Satan himself, Satan would remind Nicolae that he was little more than an empty vessel, a puppet being used for Satan's purposes. Whenever Satan temporarily departed from Nicolae, he would immediately accrue the damage that years of neglect would have wrought upon his body if it was not for the indwelling, giving the impression of a decrepit, fragile and desiccated man barely alive and looking much like a corpse. Nicolae was left in this state after Jesus caused Satan to permanently depart from Nicolae, before he was cast into the Lake of Fire immediately following the Glorious Appearing.

While no other instances of divine or demonic indwelling are directly observed in the main series, it is possible that Orcus was indwelt by a demon when demonstrating his capacities as a miracle worker.
