Gustaf Zuckermandel, Sr. (also called Big Zeke) became a believer and a member of the Tribulation Force. He is the father of Gustaf Zuckermandel, Jr., who is a master of creating disguises and fake IDs. Together they had run a black market gas station when the Global Community took Big Zeke into custody for selling gasoline without a license. When Nicolae Carpathia's "mark of loyalty" was being tested out on prisoners, Gustaf Zuckermandel, Sr. became a martyr by refusing to accept the mark, already having become a believer. He would be reunited with his son at Jesus' Second Coming.

In Left Behind: The Kids: The Mark of the Beast, Deputy Commander Darryl Henderson oversaw his execution. Zeke Sr. was being held in a prison in Des Plaines, Illinois, along with Maggie Carlson and Bo and Ginny Shairton. While he was in prison, Zeke Sr. tried to evangelize to the prisoners, saying that the current events of the Tribulation had been prophesied thousands of years ago, and warned them not to take mark and tried to talk to them about God. Zeke Sr. was able to reach Manny Aguilara and led him to say the Sinner's Prayer. While talking to Morale Monitor Natalie Bishop who was secretly a Christian, Zeke Sr. refused an offer to escape since he is a highly valuable prisoner for the Global Community as he is subversive to the Global Community, not a mere criminal, thus any escape would implicate those involved. The Young Tribulation Force later infiltrated the prison and freed Maggie Carlson, the Shairtons, and Manny.

In the Dramatic Audio presentation of the series, Gustaf Sr. speaks with a European accent, suggesting he is an immigrant. Also, in the Dramatic Audio presentation, before Gustaf Sr. is executed by the guillotine, he tells Suhail Akbar (or a man with the same voice actor) who was interrogating him that Akbar would eventually bend his knee and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, in accordance to Philippians 2:6-11. Akbar, however, did not survive to the sheep and goats judgment where everyone knelt before Jesus, just dying a few hours before the Glorious Appearing. Darryl Henderson from the kid's series would be a more appropriate character, since Akbar would unlikely be personally involved in regional Global Community affairs away from the Palace in New Babylon.
